Aluminium Foil: Characteristics and Properties

Barrier Protection
Aluminum foil’s total barrier to light, gases and moisture is the principal reason for its use in flexible laminates for food, drink and technical applications. Even when very thin it provides perfect protection and preservation of aroma and product characteristics. It can help to extend the viable life of sensitive products for many months, even years, fully retaining original aromas. By enabling products to be preserved for long periods without the need for refrigeration, aluminum foil packaging helps to prevent spoilage and can provide large energy savings.

Mechanical Properties
Light yet strong, aluminum foil has unique deadfold characteristics which make it ideal for wrapping and re-wrapping many different products and product shapes, while minimizing the need for sealants. Because it is very malleable it can be easily deformed without losing its barrier integrity, making it an ideal material for use in combination with other flexible substrates to create very thin laminates for a variety of markets and consequently, again, save resources.

Formability and Strength
When pressed into a shaped dish, the aluminium foil memorizes its shape, particularly where the folds and rims occur. Shape, thickness, alloy and temper can be selected to create exactly the performance characteristics required.

Lightweight and Space Efficient
Economies in both transport and storage result from lightness, flat or reeled format of empty packs and, in the case of aluminum foil containers, their nesting shapes which are particularly suited to filling machine magazines. Aluminum foil helps save resources during packaging, product and waste transportation. By enabling products to be preserved for long periods without the need for refrigeration, aluminum foil packaging provides large energy savings. Their shape can make them very ‘space efficient’ in storage and display, enabling further energy and cost savings. Aluminum foil is weight saving, versatile and minimizes the amount of packaging material needed.

Structural Stability
In light honeycomb structures aluminium foil introduces the necessary stiffness and stability enabling architects to lighten building structures and foundations; and engineers to save weight in all types of transport – ships, planes, trucks and cars.

Recycling
Aluminium is fully recyclable, without any loss of quality. The recycling process for aluminium requires 95% less energy compared to its primary production, which corresponds to enormous emission savings.

Heat Performance
Aluminum foil is very conductive to heat. It stands up to all temperature variations encountered in the processing and use of packaging–from well below blast-freezing to the extremes of baking and grilling- without distorting, melting or the risk of sudden cracking. Aluminum foil also dissipates heat quickly–ideal for autoclaving and heat-sealing processes. Its heat conductivity can help minimize processing, chilling and reheating times.

Hygiene
Once produced, aluminum foil is completely sterile due to the high temperature annealing process. It is safe for use in contact with foodstuffs and it does not harbour or promote the growth of bacteria.

Decorative Potential
Aluminum foil’s bright or matt metallic finish plus its compatibility with all printing technologies provides designers with enormous scope to create packs with stunning graphic design, shelf presence and brand identity.

Reflectivity
Aluminium foil reflects up to 98% of light and infrared heat. The bright surface also has low heat emissivity. This helps to save energy in insulation. Its insulation role extends into fire protection. In ‘fire walls’ for vehicles and ships, for fire-resistant doors and building panels, aluminium foil dissipates heat and stops access to the oxygen required to support flames.

Some Ways to Use Household Aluminum Foils

Create a pastry bag: To decorate a cake or cupcakes, form a cone using aluminum foil. Fill it, frost it and toss it out.

Scrub away stuck-on foods: Much like steel wool, aluminum foil formed into a crumpled ball can remove all kinds of stuck-on gunk from pots and pans. Do not use on nonstick pans since the hard edges of the foil could likely ruin the finish.

Stabilize stuffed bell peppers and squash: If your bell peppers or acorn squash halves are falling over as they bake in a casserole dish, roll up a thick strip of foil and place it on the side that needs stabilized. The foil strip keeps the vegetable level, preventing the filling from spilling out.

Create a funnel: When you need to quickly improvise a funnel for pouring ingredients into narrow openings, aluminum foil is your friend. The more heavy duty the foil is, the better it works.

Line your air fryer tray: If you’re using a rack-style air fryer, clean up is a breeze by lining the air fryer tray with aluminum foil. If the foil doesn’t get dirty, reuse it. Otherwise, just toss the foil and replace it with a new sheet.

Catching food drips: It can happen to the best of us; as food cooks in the oven, it sometimes bubbles over. Keep a sheet of foil across the bottom of the oven (read the oven manufacturer’s guidelines first). Another option is to always lay a sheet of foil onto a rimmed baking sheet placed beneath the casserole dish or pie plate.

Protect pie crust: If you’re baking pies and notice the top crust is getting too browned, gently lay a single sheet of foil across the top of the entire pie. The foil will prevent the crust from browning any further and allow the pie to continue to bake until set at the center.

Keep dinner party foods warm: Wrapping food tightly in heavy-duty foil keeps the heat contained. As a bonus, after dinner it’s handy to use the same foil for wrapping up any leftovers.

Freeze foods safely: Just as foil can work to keep hot air in, it’s also great for keeping cold air out. Wrap leftovers in plastic wrap, then add a good layer of heavy-duty foil to protect the food from freezer burn. Adding the exterior layer of foil allows most foods to last in the freezer for up to six months.

Shine your silverware: If your silverware has seen better days, let aluminum foil come to the rescue. Line a pan with aluminum foil (both across the bottom and up the sides), fill it with cold water then add a few teaspoons of table salt. Place your tarnished silverware into the prepared solution, setting a timer for five minutes. When the timer sounds, remove the silverware from the saltwater solution, rinse well and dry. You will be amazed at how your “new” silverware sparkles and shines.

Sharpen kitchen shears: If your kitchen shears aren’t snipping fresh herbs and scallions as quickly and easily as they once were, run them across a doubled sheet of aluminum foil. After about eight to 10 cuts, your kitchen shears should be good as new.

Move heavy furniture: When you need to move heavy chairs or couches to a new spot, wrap the feet in a couple layers of foil. This technique might sound crazy, but you’ll soon become a believer when you see how the foil makes the furniture glide over carpet.

Keep a paintbrush moist: Is the job not finished, but you’ll be painting again tomorrow? Instead of cleaning out your paintbrush, squeeze out any excess paint, then tightly wrap the paintbrush in aluminum foil.

Aluminum Foil for Industrial Applications

Aluminum foil for insulation and vapor barrier in the construction industry: One of the most important fields of application of aluminum foil is insulation. It is used, for example, as a heat-insulating layer for the insulation of pipes and ducts. Aluminum foil laminated with scrim with highly effective heat insulation of pipes. In the construction industry, aluminum foil is also used as a top layer for insulating materials such as stone wool, foam insulation panels, and lamellar mats in buildings' insulation. As a vapor barrier, the film ensures that no water vapor penetrates the insulation material and prevents mold formation and moisture damage. In addition to the vapor barrier property, aluminum foils reflect approximately 96% of radiant heat and are therefore very well suitable for thermal insulation. They can also be easily deformed or coated with a protective varnish, which increases their scope of application. Because of its easy handling, aluminum foil allows fast installation even in large buildings such as warehouses.

Aluminum Foil for insulation of cables: Due to its low weight and high conductivity, aluminum foil is ideal for power cables' insulation. This is particularly important for heavy-duty high voltage cables. It not only improves electromagnetic compatibility but can also be used to localize damage. Besides, aluminum provides a certain degree of protection against electrical shock caused by damaged cables. The aluminum foil's barrier property also protects fiber cables from moisture and reduces interference from electronic devices in communication cables.

Aluminum foil as the basis for aluminum tape: Aluminum adhesive tape is a thin aluminum foil, one side of which is coated with heat-resistant adhesive. Compared to adhesive tapes made of plastic, aluminum adhesive tape offers the advantage that it is highly thermally resistant. It is not rendered brittle either by heat or cold and is therefore much more durable than plastic adhesive tapes. Aluminum adhesive tape is used, especially in heating and ventilation systems. For example, the pipe insulation is wrapped with thin wires, which give it the necessary support. The wires are then fixed in place with aluminum adhesive tape. Joints and interfaces are also covered with aluminum tape to improve the insulation. Aluminum is also used in the construction industry, for example, to close the joints in a vapor barrier or prevent heat loss due to leaking insulation. In electrical engineering, aluminum tape is used as a shield. For this purpose, housing parts or openings are glued with self-adhesive aluminum foil or aluminum adhesive tape.

Aluminum Foil Manufacturing Process

Casting
The production castings, fine aluminum ingots (to remove impurities) suitable for for rolled, heated to melt into molten metal. Some manufacturers will add the rolling debris to formulate different purity aluminum ingots, but the total purity is guaranteed. Molten metal generally use rolling to become billets by continuous casting.

Uniform Treatment
The cast billet is maintained at a high temperature close to the melting point (20-30 hours), is homogenized. As a result of this treatment, the deformation in the casting can be well eliminated, and the impurities also dissolve in solid solution and the impurity distribution becomes uniform.

Surface Cutting
Billet has irregular surface and the oxide layer.. So it is need to be cut about 8-10mm’s thick.

Hot-rolled
After the billet is heated at about 5000C, the billet is put on a rolling mill and hot-rolled. Rolling about 10 times, pressure to about 3-5mm’s thick, rolled into coils (hot coil). During rolling, rolling and recrystallization occur at the same time, the foundry structure is destroyed, resulting in mm.

Cold-rolled
The hot coil is cold rolled at about 800C while cooling. After about 3 times, rolled to about 0.5-0.6mm’s thick, roll into coils. This is what we commonly called the original foil.

Foil Rolling
The original foil is cold-rolled into thin foil by a high-precision rolling machine. Aluminum can be rolled to minimum of 5μ. When rolling about 10μ or less, two overlapping rolling can be used. The original foil achieve the required thickness by rolling several times.

Wash Winding
The rolling is finished, the rolled oil is washed away, and then wound into rolls.

Annealing
Hard foil is generally through heat treated, annealed to semi-hard or to the end of recrystallization. Sometimes provide a very soft foil by high temperature annealing close to the melting point. Annealing is an important process that determines the nature of the foil. In addition, in order to impart special properties to the aluminum foil, annealing is also carried out during the rolling.

Cut the Foil
Aluminum foil produced only by rolling has irregular edges. Moreover, most users require foil that is narrower than the maximum width of the rolling. Therefore, not only about the edge of the foil, but also the rolling direction should be cut. This process is called cutting the foil, it is sometimes also carried out before annealing.

How Do I Pick the Best Household Aluminum Foil for Home Use?

Guidelines for selecting the right sort of foil roll: In order to get the best results, choose the appropriate roll type when buying aluminum foil for household usage. Different types of aluminum foil are more suitable for particular tasks including cooking, grilling, baking, or packing.

Examine intended use, including packing, grilling, frying, and baking: The appropriate type of aluminum foil is heavily influenced by the intended application for which it will be used. The use of aluminum foil rolls differs depending on whether it is being used for cooking, grilling, baking, or packing, and by selecting the right application method, better culinary outcomes can be obtained.

Understand foil strength requirements: The strength of household aluminum foil is an important consideration, especially when wrapping specific items. Delicate foods may require lighter foil rolls, while heavier or sharper objects may require heavy or extra heavy-duty foil rolls. Knowing the strength of household aluminum foil is to better protect your food.

Household Aluminum Foil
Why is Aluminium Foil So Popular?

Temperature Retention

Even though they are an excellent conductor of electricity due to having three valent electrons. However, due to their extremely low density, these foils become a good insulator of heat. This property allows them to retain the heat of any item packed inside of them. This comes in use particularly, while packing hot food.

Secure Seal
Being a solid metal, aluminum does not allow air or liquid to pass through it. And being extremely malleable and mouldable, allows users to create airtight seals from these foils. Like used in packaging for food manufacturers, medicines, etc.

Weight Reduction
Do you know that aluminum is the 5th least dense metal on the periodic table? Meaning that it is extremely light in weight. That is one of the reasons that aircraft frames are made from aluminium, as it provides an extreme weight-to-rigidity ratio. This also helps in shipping products throughout the supply chain, with the increase in volume, businesses can see a significant increase in transportation costs.

Non-Reactive
Unlike most metals that are resistant to corrosion, aluminum is highly non-reactive. Meaning that in the case of packaging items like food and liquids, the foil does not react with the substance. This helps in preserving the flavor and quality of the final product.

Environmentally Friendly
These foils are mostly made using pure aluminum, making them non-hazardous. They also do not contaminate and pollute the environment. In addition, it is very easy and cheap to recycle aluminum foil. According to studies, recycling aluminum foil only requires about 6% of the total energy requirement of manufacturing new foils.

Malleable and Flexible
Aluminum is extremely malleable and foldable without the risk of breaking off. Although most metals are malleable, however, aluminum is one another playing field. You can crumple their foils into a small ball, and it still wouldn’t break. This makes them perfect for packing items of all shapes and sizes.

Ultimate Guide

Q: How thick is household aluminum foil?

A: However, most household aluminium foil sheets fall somewhere between 0.006 inches (0.15 mm) and 0.072 inches (1.83 mm) thick.

Q: What are the uses of aluminium foil in everyday life?

A: Approximately 75% of aluminium foil is used for packaging of foods, cosmetics, and chemical products, and 25% is used for industrial applications (e.g., thermal insulation, electrical cables, and electronics). It can be easily recycled.

Q: Is there a difference between aluminum foil and tin foil?

A: Tin foil was made with thin leaf tin and sometimes combined with lead. Aluminum foil is made from an alloy that is between 92 and 99 percent aluminum. Aluminum foil is significantly cheaper to make than tin foil. As an added bonus, it's also more efficient and effective.

Q: Is all aluminum foil the same thickness?

A: Aluminum foil is available in various thicknesses, typically measured in microns or mils. Foil thickness can range from as thin as 10 microns (0.01 mm) to as thick as 100 microns (0.1 mm) or more.

Q: What are the uses of aluminium foil in food industry?

A: Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, and so it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging, including long-life packs for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration.

Q: What are the properties of aluminum foil?

A: The material is light but strong, can be formed and converted into complex shapes, exhibits excellent corrosion and temperature resistance, shows a high thermal and electrical conductivity, and can be recycled without a decrease in quality.

Q: What is good about aluminum foil as a packing material?

A: One of the main reasons to use aluminum foil as a packaging material is its excellent barrier properties. foil foil aluminium rolls form a physical barrier that blocks moisture, light, gases and germs. This makes it an ideal choice for wrapping food items and keeping them fresher for longer.

Q: Does aluminum foil rust?

A: Aluminum corrodes but it does not rust. Rust refers only to iron and steel corrosion. Aluminum is actually very prone to corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion is aluminum oxide, a very hard material that actually protects the aluminum from further corrosion.

Q: Should you use the shiny or dull side of aluminum foil?

A: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, aluminum foil's two-sided finish is the result of its production process. When the material passes through rollers, two layers of foil are pressed at the same time, which reduces the risk of breakage. As a result, one side is shiny and the other is matte. However, the different finishes do not have different functions, and they react with food in the same way.

Q: What packing you should use to store the aluminum foil?

A: All aluminum foil by wooden box specially used for aluminum foil oversea exporting. It's best to use original package to store it to keep the beautiful surface and good flatness. When repacking opened rolls, try to reseal them in their original packaging or use an airtight alternative to keep the foil as fresh as the day it was unrolled.

Q: How insulating is aluminum foil?

A: Yes, aluminum foil is a good insulator. This is because it prevents heat radiation by reflecting it back to the source. The other materials in comparison to aluminum, simply slow down the flow of heat from one area to another but aluminum foil reflects the heat emission and thus tends to be a better insulator.

Q: Does the shiny part of aluminum foil matter?

A: Foil has a shiny side and a dull side because of how it is manufactured. Unless you are using foil that's labeled non-stick, which does have a non-stick side, it does not matter what side you use. Both the shiny and dull sides can be used the same way to cook, freeze, and store food.
